IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alberta Evans
Dumas
January 31, 1949 – January 14, 2026
With profound love and deep sorrow, we celebrate the life of Alberta Robinson (Evans) Dumas, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend and the undeniable glue that kept her family connected.
Alberta was one of eight children born on January 31, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Willie Warren and Mary Alice Warren. From an early age, she learned the values of responsibility, compassion, and service; values that would define her entire life.
She was educated at East Technical High School and dedicated her professional life to caring for others. Alberta worked as a nursing assistant, a career that reflected her natural gift for nurturing, advocacy, and service. Caring for people was notjust her profession; it was who she was.
Alberta was baptized at Second Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, grounding her life in faith from an early age.
Alberta was first married to Claybourne Evans, Sr., and through that union became the proud mother of two children, DeLisa and Claybourne Evans, Jr. She endured unimaginable loss when Claybourne Evans, Sr. preceded her in death at an early age. Several years later, she met and married Freddie Dumas, and from that union her youngest daughter, the apple of her eye, Tyshima Dumas, was born.
To know Alberta was to know love, generosity, and strength. She was the heart of the family; the one who kept everyone connected, and grounded. Her home was always open, her table always had room, and her presence always brought comfort. She was a safe place for the younger ones; the cousins, the children, and the grandchildren, who found in her someone they could talk to freely, honestly, and without judgment. She listened, she guided (and got them together in her own special way), and she protected, all while making sure they stayed on the right path.
Alberta gave endlessly of herself. She was firm but fair, nurturing yet disciplined, and always led with love. She took care of everyone, often placing others' needs before her own, and never asked for recognition in return.
She was a lover of travel and adventure, especially cruising around the world with her family and friends. She enjoyed trips to the casino and fellowshipping with family; always finding joy wherever she went.
Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Mary Alice Warren; her first spouse, Claybourne Evans, Sr.; her second spouse, Freddie Dumas; her fiancé, Cornelius Brown; her son, Claybourne Evans, Jr.; her brothers, William and Arthur Robinson; and her sister, Stephanie Lockett.
She leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, DeLisa (Daniel) Prater and Tyshima Witherspoon; one daughter-in-love, Ursula Evans; three grandchildren, Roemello Prater, Claybourne Evans III, and Jada Prater; one great-grandson, Isaiah Prater; three sisters, Ida Weems, Clarice Brown, and Lawona Warren and a cousin who was like a sister, Ernestine (Quintin) Jenkins; one brother, Willie Lee (Benitha) Warren; a devoted nephew, Jewell Washington; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Though she left this earth too soon, her legacy is everlasting. She lives on in the lives she touched, the family she held together, and the love she poured into every space she entered.
